Aanandaa Permaculture Farm is a leading resource for permaculture education. If you are looking for information on permaculture design in India or globally, you should subscribe to these channel. Founded in 2011, the stewards of this land, Manisha Lath Gupta and her family, have converted a barren piece of land into a lush green forest, using permaculture techniques and principles. They have done extensive rainwater management and sequester upto 40mn litres of rainwater each year. They have planted a multi layered forest of over 6000 trees, and regenerated the topsoil by mulching. The land is now abundant with food, and species of birds and insects. Manisha is a Permaculture teacher and content creator, and you can see several helpful videos on permaculture design, concepts and implementation on this channel. She believes, that everyone can build a permaculture farm.

Make a Root Cellar - Part II
In this video, the founder of Aanandaa Permaculture Project, Manisha Lath Gupta shares her experience of making a root cellar as a part of her sustainable house. Root cellars are popular in western countries with temperate climates. When the external temperature is below freezing, a root cellar provides the perfect weather to store produce to tide over the winter months. With high humidity levels, these cellars created a refrigerator-like environment for storage.
However, in tropical and sub tropical climates like where Aanandaa is located, a root cellar behaves quite differently. IT helps to create an ambient temperature which is more stable, and does not fluctuate as much as the external atmospheric temperature.
The lit part of the cellar is just under our kitchen and cannot be sealed as it has the open stairs leading down to it. In this area, the air is a bit dry, and there is always some light. So we cannot store root vegetables like potatoes, turmeric, ginger, colocasia etc which tend to sprout in the light.
In the lit or dry cellar, we store onions and garlic by handing them in bunches on the wall from a metal wire. We also use the same wire to hang things to dry, like bay leaves or some flowers from our garden.
IN addition, this is the space to store cereals like wheat, oilseeds like mustard & groundnut and pulses like Urad, Lobiya, Moong, Masoor, Arhar etc..
We have also placed a deep freezer here, which we use to freeze excess vegetables form the previous season. These vegetables help us to tide over time periods of low productivity from the garden.

in my childhood in village we used to have deep small rooms dug around the inner area of the house ., where grains used to be stored with Baalu ret ……. it used to stay fresh and when needed we just took out the portions and saperate the Baalu sand with sieve

Can you throw some more light as to how it is more cooler and convinient than other directions? Also, the North East corner is also the North East of your farm? Or is it North East of your house?
Its the northeast of the house. Sun shines from the south side through most of the day, and then becomes really strong during the afternoon when it is in the west. That is how the north east corner is usually coolest.

Hello there! You all are doing a wonderful work to revive this beautiful sustainable practice. I am trying to use lime plaster on brick wall, what is the minimum time needed to slake Hydrated Lime before using it?
I think it should be a month. You will be able to tell when the lumps break down completely and you get a nice thick creamy texture.
Sound quality is an issue this time. Maybe coz of closed room. Pls work on it in next parts at least.

Lime breaks down very fast compared to Portland cement. While this may appeal to people who think about it decomposing, I want what I make with it to last longer than me. Lime lasts a few years or a decade. Portland cement lasts many decades.
You must visit India sometime to see structures which are centuries old, built in lime and still standing strong!
